Scavenger photo hunt – February

The six scavenger photo hunt prompts for this month are white, metal/metallic, camouflage, begins with ‘J’, bud, and my own choice, so after much brain-racking and photo archive searching I’ve finally managed to come up with some (hopefully) suitably corresponding shots. The first one was fairly easy, as it’s still winter I chose a shot which I took several years ago while on a dog walk through local woodland after a period of prolonged and heavy snowfall. That was the last proper snowfall we had locally, anything since then has been and gone within twenty four hours.

The next photo is one I used on this blog about twelve months ago but as it fits the category I thought I may as well use it again. Castell Dinas Bran, otherwise known as Crow Castle, is a medieval ruin which sits in a prominent hilltop position high above Llangollen in North Wales and the footpath to the top of the hill passes through a gate with the metal sculpture of a crow on top of the gate post.

Metal/metallic
A grey day on Anglesey a couple of years ago saw me visiting Pili Palas Nature World where (apologies if anyone doesn’t like spiders) I found this tarantula in the tropical section, looking very much like the surrounding vegetation in its home.  I quite like tarantulas and at one time, years ago, I did consider having a couple as pets but never actually got round to getting any.

Camouflage
Having recently been badly affected by Aussie flu I lived for almost two weeks on nothing but water and fruit juice, and thanks to Michael who limped down to our local Asda a couple of times I discovered apple and cherry juice. It’s not something I would have chosen myself but I’d told him to surprise me and that’s what he came back with – and very nice it is too. I tend to find that ‘mixed’ fruit juices always have a dominant flavour but with this one both flavours are distinctive and I liked the first carton so much that I now have a stock of them in the fridge ready for when I want a chilled drink.

Begins with ‘J’
I had to think hard for the next photo but then I remembered one I’d taken almost exactly two years ago on February 26th – the crocuses were on a grass bank which I pass regularly while walking the dogs near home. I don’t know if unopened crocuses can be called buds but that’s what many of them were, with the partially opened ones beginning to look quite pretty in contrast to the green grass.

My final photo this time just had to be this one of Poppie. It was taken on the evening of the day I got her in October 2014 – her first night in a new home and though she looks very much like a puppy I’d been told that she was actually six years old. She came with her own bed, some food and a bag full of toys and was very timid and shy to start with so she slept at the side of my bed for the first two weeks before joining Sophie and Sugar downstairs. Sadly I lost Sugar to kidney failure less than two months later but Sophie and Poppie have been firm friends ever since.

My own choice – Poppie on her first night here
So there you are, my photos for this month’s six topics – I’m popping over to Kate’s blog now to see what interesting photos others have found.

  1. All lovely photos especially the first one and even the tarantula 🙂 I’ll have a look for the juice in Asda, I really do like cherries. Aww and Poppy looking gorgeous, how long ago was that photo taken if I may ask, just trying to guess her age? It’s good that your girls made friends so soon, my Annie doesn’t like other bitches, well not in her house anyway. She didn’t like daughter’s Tinker and is even worse with Molly 😦

  2. I’m glad you like the first photo, I took several nice ones on that woodland walk so it was hard to choose which one to use.

Poppie’s photo was taken on October 30th 2014 (I’ve amended the post slightly) so I use that date as her ‘birthday’ which makes her just over nine years old now if I was told the right information. To be honest the circumstances in which I got her were rather odd and I think the people I got her from were rather economical with the truth in several ways but if they lied about her age I’ve no way of knowing any different. Her only real problem is not liking cats and other dogs but with careful thought that’s easily dealt with.

  3. Your white photo is wonderful and so is your own choice, Poppie looks lovely. We pass through and sometimes stop at Llangollen each year on our way to the Llyn peninsula and have often seen the castle on the hill but have never been up there, the crow sculpture is wonderful:)

  4. I thought the crow sculpture on the gate post was quite unusual and not something you would expect to see halfway up a steep hill. Llangollen is a lovely little town isn’t it? – I like the Llyn peninsula too and have explored several places round there. Have you ever been to Porth Dinllaen? If not it’s well worth a visit on a nice day. I see from your blog you live in Stoke-on-Trent – my best schoolfriend lives there, Weston Coyney to be exact – I used to like shopping in Hanley but haven’t been there for ages.

    1. Yes, we have been to Porth Dinllaen a couple of times it’s a lovely place we also like Llanbedrog for the beach and art gallery and Aberdaron too. We stay in a friend’s caravan at Prenteg just beyond Tremadog when we visit. We are close to Weston Coyney and pass through it on our way to Caverswall and beyond:)

  5. So glad you joined in! Lovely photos, the crow is brilliant and *shudder* spiders? I happily live along side of them however they must not make eye contact!

  6. I don’t mind spiders at all but I have a friend who is terrified of them – if she sees one in the house she’ll ring me and ask me to go and remove it. It’s a good job she only lives literally round the corner and not several miles away! 🙂

  7. I love the crow sculpture. I would love to come accross something like that on a walk. I showed Wil the little slightly scary dog face I found and he thinks it may be a tribute to a loved pet that has died and its owner nailed it on the fence ( possibly their fave walk together) to remember him/her by. Think that would be a nice story. 🙂 The Turantula does look like a plant in your pic. I am very scared of spiders. I once had one in my hair all morning and didn’t realise. My companion thought it was a gothic hair slide…until it started crawling round my head! I love the pic of Poppie. She looks a sweetie. 🙂

  8. If your scary dog face is a tribute to a much-loved pet then that makes a nice story. I think I’d be inclined to go to the nearest house and ask if they knew anything about it, it would really bug me not knowing 🙂

My ex partner was 6ft 3ins tall and scared of spiders – what a wimp! 🙂 🙂

Poppie is a very sweet little dog but she can be a little sod sometimes! 🙂

  9. Ewww, I am not keen on tarantulas (or any other spider truth be told) but it does blend in with it surroundings well and what a great photo. Love the snow scene and who could not be moved by pretty Poppy? x

    1. It’s nice that you like the snow scene, I have several which I took that day so it was hard to choose just one. And Poppie does look rather cute doesn’t she? 🙂

  10. I too like the crow statue but my favourite is the big spider! I do like tarantulas but would not want one as a pet. I’m OK with spiders as long as I can see them; mind you the other day I picked up my crochet blanket and a small spider appeared! It was re-housed, in the bin!

    1. Poor little spider ending up in the bin 😦 A few years ago I was camping close to a line of tall trees and I had lots of tiny little spiders in the tent – I was sitting reading one evening when something moved in front of my face, it was a spider abseiling down from my fringe! 🙂

  11. Hi Eunice, so glad you’ve joined in & great photos, though I could do without a spider, even with all our big ones here in Oz.(giggle). I’ve a St.Andrews Cross spider who lives near my azalea & I leave him alone, but don’t like our great big huntsman. Have you ever tried Apple & Ginger juice? It’s really nice & I’m drinking some now at breakfast time as I write this. Do you realise you have a great daffodil bud in that photo & I love the photo of Poppie. Take care.

  12. Thanks for the comment Susan, I’m glad you like the photo of Poppie. She’s not the easiest little dog to take photos of so that one being the very first I have of her is a little bit special. I’ve never had apple and ginger juice, didn’t even know there is such a thing but I’ve just Googled it and one of our ‘big five’ supermarkets sells it so maybe I’ll try it sometime. I’ve just come across apple and rhubarb juice too so I’ll definitely give that one a try 🙂

  13. Thank you, I’m glad you like them. I must admit to being a bit confused though when I first saw your name – I know someone of the same name who often accompanies her hubby when he goes fishing (a reference to ‘roachling’ here) and I saw her yesterday after several months. Although my blog was never mentioned I thought at first that she’d somehow discovered it! :-/

  14. I’m a bit late with my comments this month and seeing your snow picture for white had me wondering how much you have had these last few days. Love your raven and Poppy picture. Like most people who have lived in hot climes, I don’t like spiders, snakes or other creepy crawlies although we have to learn to tolerate them.

  15. Locally there’s only been a few inches of snow recently and it’s disappeared already in many places – it’s only the wind which is making it so cold just now. It’s nice that you like my Poppie picture, her first night with me and she looked like such a baby but actually six years old. I don’t like slimy things but snakes and spiders I don’t mind at all 🙂
