Not a proper blog post

I’d fully intended writing a proper blog post last night to publish this morning but found it impossible as I can’t, at the moment, sit in front of my pc for long enough to do it. The reason? Yesterday at work I pulled a muscle in my back and I’m now in very painful agony – I can’t sit, stand or walk properly for any length of time and it feels like someone has stuck a knife in me and is twisting it. The first two lots of painkillers didn’t touch it but the third lot helped and I did manage to get some (very broken) sleep, though I got up this morning with hair which looks like a bird’s nest as I’ve moved around in bed so much.
The poor pets didn’t get fed last night as I couldn’t bend down to pick up their bowls so I sent Michael a text asking for his help when he came in from his night shift this morning; he picked up the bowls, sorted out their food and even took Poppie for a short walk before going to bed for the day. There’s no way I can take Poppie for a walk myself just now so she’ll be on ‘garden exploration’ only for the next few days.
I did this once before, about six years ago, and it took two weeks before I was completely pain free. Back then I did it while I was washing my hair, yesterday I was reaching for a mop bucket under the sink in the works canteen – who would believe that such simple actions would trigger something which causes so much pain. For someone who is always healthy, never ill and (usually) as fit as the proverbial flea my current condition isn’t just painful it’s downright annoying too. It does have it’s funny side though – it’s not often that I ever drop things but anything which lands on the floor now has to stay there until Michael can pick it up for me. The house could end up looking like a war zone!
I’m glad in a way that our lovely sunny weather has now gone pear shaped, at least I won’t be tempted to go out walking while my back is playing up. I’ve got three Monday walks in the pipeline so if I don’t go anywhere now for a while it doesn’t matter, and hopefully by the time I feel fit enough to go for a decent local walk the sun will be back again.
Well this is about all I’m capable of typing just now, sitting in front of the computer for any length of time is extremely uncomfortable at the moment though hopefully things will improve enough over the next couple of days and I’ll be able to write up a Monday walk – right now I’m going to make myself a much needed coffee and take some more painkillers.

  1. Ouch, so sorry to read this, back ache is horrible. I did my back once and the GP put it down to sitting at small tables on small chairs when I worked in pre-school. His advice- Don’t!

  2. Ouch is the right word 😦 Normal back ache I can cope with but this isn’t just an ache, it’s also a stabbing twisting pain which is limiting my movements, though hopefully the painkillers will help and it’ll subside soon.

  3. Oh Eunice, I hope your back feels better soon. Can you get an appointment with a doctor to give you some stronger painkillers? I believe they will speak with you over the phone now and issue a prescription to be picked up. I did my back in once just leaning into the back seat of the car to reach Annie’s dog lead. Ended up borrowing a walking stick as my legs would barely move without pain. You’re right it’s not backache but agonising pain but it should improve if you rest up and take it easy. Thinking of you!

  4. I’ve got some fairly strong painkillers but I’m only allowed to take three per day with food – I’ve only taken one so far today, hopefully if I take the full daily dose as from tomorrow things should start to improve. I’ve found at the moment that the best way to ease it is to sit up in bed with a pile of cushions behind me – not the easiest position to sleep in though 🙂

  5. I feel for you with a painful back as it is so limiting. Take care of it now & hopefully you’ll be well enough to go walking again soon & do all the things you enjoy. Stay safe & hugs from down under.

  6. Hugs back to you too Susan, I hope everything is okay for you over there. Our weather forecast for next week -if it’s right! – says we should have some more warm sunny days so I’m hoping the strong painkillers I’ve now got will soon see off this back pain. I’ve found out about a place within walking distance which I’ve never been to before so I want to go and explore 🙂

  7. I’m so sorry to read this Eunice. As someone who is usually so fit and well it must be rotten to be in so much pain and to have to depend on the help of others.
I hope by the time you read this your symptoms might have eased enough to allow you to sleep a while and rest up. X

  8. I did manage to sleep a bit better last night although it still wasn’t brilliant. I’ve had two of the strong painkillers so far today and it does seem to be easing slightly though there’s a long way to go yet. At least not being able to do much is giving me plenty of time to read my latest book 🙂

  9. The painkillers have taken the edge off it now so as long as I don’t bend down or do anything daft it should slowly improve. It’s been a lovely day here today but I haven’t been able to take advantage of it and go for a walk 😦

  10. Thanks Jo. It’s feeling a bit better now as long as I don’t move too quickly. I’ve always said I would hate to go into hospital for any reason as I would be a VERY impatient patient 🙂

  11. Ouch! Sorry to hear about this. I feel for you. If it’s muscular, would some Deep Heat help? I’ve found heat patches can be effective sometimes. All the best – and stay safe.

  12. Thanks Mike. Not feeling too bad today, I’ve got some Deep Heat so a combination of that and the strong pain killers seems to be working for me 🙂

    1. Take it easy and have lots of hot baths, but at the end of the day walking is usually good for your back. We’ll know you are recovered when a new post to walks in your area appears.

  13. Ahh, well that’s where you’d be wrong – I have four walks already done so I don’t need to wait for my back to recover before I post one 🙂 There’s a Wilton quarry one coming up but not just yet 🙂 There’s a lot less pain today so as long as I don’t make any sudden movements it should continue to improve – another couple of days and I’ll be running a marathon! 🙂 🙂
