The wrong sandwich

Last Saturday I had to pop into town and while I was there I went to do one of my cleaning jobs so I didn’t need to get up very early on Monday morning. It was mid afternoon and I was feeling a bit peckish so decided to get a Yorkie bar or a KitKat from the small shop round the corner from work. I’d never been in there before and the first thing I saw when I went in was a chiller cabinet with various items including sandwiches so I decided to get one of those instead of the chocolate bar.
The sandwiches were all on the top shelf and from left to right there was ham, BLT, egg mayo, cheese and tomato, cheese and onion, and chicken and bacon with red onion and jalepeno mayo. Opting for the cheese and onion I picked up the sandwich, paid for it, and went to work, and it was only once I’d made a brew I realised – I’d picked up the wrong sandwich and instead of cheese and onion I’d got the chicken and bacon one.
Now I don’t like spicy food at all  and as I hadn’t opened the packet I thought about going back to the shop to see if I could swap the sandwich for what I intended to get, but it was the first time I’d ever been in there and as they didn’t know me they may have been reluctant to agree so I decided to eat it anyway. I didn’t really know what to expect but jalapeno mayo couldn’t be that bad – could it?
Having cut the sandwich into four my opinion of the first quarter was “Mmm, it’s different but not too bad”. The second quarter was “Err, it’s definitely spicy”, the third quarter was “I really don’t think I like this but I’ll persevere” and the last bit was “Urgh! That was vile, horrible, I wish I’d taken it back. Now I know why I don’t like spicy food!”
There’s one thing which puzzles me about this – how on earth did I pick up the wrong sandwich in the first place? My eyes saw which sandwiches were on the shelf and my brain registered where the cheese and onion ones were, yet my hand inexplicably picked up the wrong one without me realising it. I think there was definitely a lack of hand/eye co-ordination there! One thing I did learn though – a sandwich with jalapeno mayo on it definitely does not  go well with a mug of tea!

  1. Too much choice and too little concentration maybe. Chicken and bacon yes but no to the red onion and jalepeno mayo for me without a doubt.

  2. I’d never heard of Jalapeno mayo before and I’ve never seen pre-packed sandwiches with it on but it’s definitely something to be avoided at all costs 😦

  3. That’s certainly a logical explanation – I’ve picked up the wrong item in Asda more than once because other customers have put them back in the wrong place 😦

  4. I’m weird about chicken out will never order it. No idea when or why I do that, but just don’t.
    Spicy is good though.

  5. Anyone who likes really spicy stuff would probably like a sandwich like that but I certainly didn’t. I think maybe there was too much mayo on it, it might have been better with a bit less.

  6. Very brave of you to eat something you really don’t like – hope it didn’t give you tummy ache.

I did something similar recently – pulled a packet out of a freezer cabinet and it was only when I went to put it away I realised I had bought Quorn “chicken-nugget-alikes” instead of Quorn sausages. I refuse to waste food so a couple of days later I cooked a couple as part of lunch – they were really nice! Nice enough I might even buy them again 🙂.
I was annoyed I’d made the mistake but when I was back in the same store recently I found they have both products in the same section, and the packaging is virtually identical . . . so maybe the ‘wrong sandwich’ was where your right one should have been?

  7. I was perfectly fine Jayne, although it did leave a bit of an aftertaste for a while 😦 Your suggestion is similar to Andrew’s so that could be a logical explanation for the mix up.

  8. This reminds me of the time I was expecting to bite into a delicious slice of chocolate chip cake only to get a mouthful of raisins instead. It wasn’t my mistake, however, the cakes had been given the wrong labels. I don’t think I’d like jalapinos. X

  9. I don’t really know what sort of recipes/food dishes would require jalapenos but they definitely don’t belong in the mayo on a chicken and bacon sandwich 😦 I hope your cake tasted better than my sandwich 🙂

  10. Oh dear, poor you. I don’t like spicy food either. Maybe someone just put it in the wrong place. I am afraid to say I quite often pick up the wrong item- last time it was ready rolled shortcrust pastry when I wanted puff pastry- the resulting chicken pie was not as good as usual.

  11. The sandwich being in the wrong place could certainly have been the reason why I got the wrong one. Coincidentally I almost got the wrong bread in Asda the other day – I’d picked up medium instead of thick but realised just before I went through checkout so went back to change it and found the shelves had been changed round and the medium is now where the thick has always been 😦

  12. I enjoy spicy food so I’d have probably enjoyed your sandwich. I bet you take a closer look at what you’re buying in future, haha. I’ve just read your post about Kip, such a sad story. Your poem is beautiful, as was the rainbow you saw.

  13. I don’t often buy pre-packed sandwiches anyway but I’ll certainly make sure which I get next time 🙂 Thanks for reading Kip’s story, the whole situation was just so sad. I’m glad you like the poem, and the unexpected rainbow just at the right time was truly beautiful.

  14. Oops! Sometimes the packs get mixed up on the shelves. I don’t like cheese and onion. It’s the only food I can remember refusing to eat as a child. I once sat in front of a plate of it for quite some time. Looking on the bright side, you have eaten some spices you usually wouldn’t so a few extra micronutrients, perhaps!

  15. I suppose it’s easy enough to pick up the wrong item but as far as jalapeno mayo is concerned I’ll be avoiding it like the plague in future 🙂
