More Manchester street art – the Northern Quarter

For someone who doesn’t ‘do’ cities I don’t seem to have been able to stay away from Manchester just recently. Less than two weeks since my last visit, and only a few days ago in some cases, I found out about some new street art in the Northern Quarter, so an early start yesterday morning saw me in the city for 9am on a mission with the camera.
My first port of call was the section of Thomas Street which was in the process of being pedestrianised when I was there two weeks ago, and without all the barriers which had previously been in place I was able to get several uninterrupted photos. In an alleyway just off the street was a large artwork stretching along two walls of a corner building and only completed last Friday, and though there was nothing to say who the artist was I’ve been informed since then that it was done by otto_schade.

A bit further up Thomas Street was Cane & Grain, a New York style cocktail bar; two weeks ago the frontage was surrounded by scaffolding so I could only get partial shots of the shutters but now with its makeover complete and the scaffolding gone I could photograph the whole building.

The old Tib Street/Thomas Street substation had gained two new artworks to accompany the recent Tom Moore mural, and a few yards further along was a newly painted wall which I assumed had been commissioned by the Northern Soul Grilled Cheese place just across the street.

At the junction of Thomas Street and Hilton Street the shutter of Fresh Bites takeaway had undergone a makeover by Qubek while round the corner on Oldham Street another couple of shutters had new words painted on them. Up the road the lower part of Stevenson Square had been blocked off to traffic and had new artwork in several places; even the bollards, metal barriers and the lower parts of some of the lamp posts had been painted in wacky designs and bright colours.

Most of the new artwork seemed to be concentrated in just a couple of small areas so once I’d found as much as I could I went walkabout round the side streets and alleyways to see what else I could find. Some of the alleyways were the type of places most people wouldn’t dream of going down but then you never know what you might miss if you don’t, and I actually did find a few things which I hadn’t seen before.

My wanderings had actually taken me away from the NQ for a while until I’d come full circle and ended up back on Thomas Street. That was where I took the last four shots of artwork on a series of hoardings surrounding a patch of disused land then I made my way back to the station for the train home; after four hours of constant walking it was time to relax for a while.

  1. They are fabulous, well done on finding so many new paintings to photograph. Love the “Same shit different day”, that made me smile 🙂

  2. It made me smile too so I just had to include it. I was quite surprised at how many things in Stevenson Square had been painted, the place has really been brightened up 🙂

  3. I recognise the style of that first corner but don’t ask me to put a name on the artist. Intriguing, the ‘rolled tape’. 🙂 🙂 And I love those birds- storks, maybe? Just have to smile at the playful stuff. Have a good week, Eunice!

    1. Have a good week yourself Jo 🙂 Someone posted a pic on Instagram of the guy painting the tiger but it didn’t give his name – pity as I would have credited him otherwise. I would assume Qubek’s birds are storks, and the playful stuff is certainly cheerful 🙂

      1. Thanks for your comment and info Olivia and welcome to the Mouse House blog, I’ve added the artist’s name under the tiger pic. Only just recently I’ve managed to find the names of other artists which I didn’t know but whose work I’ve featured in other posts so I’ll add those too when I get the time 🙂

    1. I wandered into Ancoats the other day, looking for a big colourful bird. Ancoats isn’t really known for street art as there’s not much good stuff, it’s all in the NQ, but surprisingly I did find lots of shutters and decorated hoardings so that’s another post to come 🙂

  4. I like how the creatures on that corner building are all connected with the ribbon – it’s a great artwork and I wish I knew who had done it. The NQ is definitely ‘the’ place for street art, even when I think I’ve seen everything I still find some more in an obscure alleyway or corner 🙂

  5. I could think of nothing worse BC – I don’t even go shopping in my own town centre, although I do occasionally do paid assignments as a mystery shopper. Back in the 80s/early 90s I would go to Manchester once a month and probably come back with several bags of stuff but that was when I spent much of my spare time dancing and/or exercising and also had a job where I was in the public eye. Now I absolutely hate shopping and only do it if there’s no alternative.

      1. 🙂 🙂 You should have seen the stuff I came back with when I did go shopping all those years ago. Clothes-wise, if I found something I liked I bought one in every colour, then I had to have the shoes/sandals to match, plus contrasting belts and costume jewellery. And my dancing and fitness gear had a wardrobe all of its own 🙂

  6. Wow! It’s beginning to look like every inch of Manchester is being painted. The street art looks especially good when it’s brand spanking new too..x

  7. That’s why I went back again so soon, to catch it all while it was still very new. There are currently two huge double gable end walls which were painted over a few weeks ago ready for new artwork so I’ll be back again when those are done 🙂

    1. Some of these certainly do have the ‘wow’ factor, especially as a lot of them are concentrated in a relatively small area. There are some very talented people brightening up the Northern Quarter 🙂

  8. The snake and tiger one in Back Thomas Street is well worth a look, I just wish I knew who had done it. I was also looking for the Guardian Of Ancoats – the big bird which is supposed to be on or around Gun Street – it’s on loads of blogs and websites as a ‘must see’ but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Has it disappeared? I know it’s an older one so maybe it has.

  9. I love all the new stuff, it’s great. Manchester is just a 15-minute train ride from home so easy to get to, and if I go early on a Sunday morning there’s very few people around so I can take my photos without anyone getting in the way 🙂
