Somewhere new – Ennerdale Water

After a bit of a misty start it turned into a beautiful sunny morning and for the last full day of the holiday I was going to somewhere I hadn’t previously been. Ennerdale Water is the most westerly of all the lakes and according to various sources is the least visited – with my preference for quieter places I was looking forward to a good dog walk where hopefully I wouldn’t meet too many people.
It was a nice easy drive from Cockermouth down the A5086 then round the country lanes and through Ennerdale Bridge village. With a choice of two car parks I went to Bowness Knott on the north side of the lake first but didn’t stay long. The car park itself was set among tall conifers at the edge of a large forest on the narrower part of the lake; with the sun behind the higher fells to the south quite a bit of the area was in shade so I only took a short walk before driving to the other car park, making a couple of brief photo stops on the way.

The second car park, Bleach Green, was at the south western corner of the lake where a short walk through a wooded area and along a wide pleasant path took me to the widest and more open part. A small weir allowed water from the lake to feed the River Ehen and the views down the lake itself were stunning.
When I’d first thought about going to Ennerdale I’d also thought about walking all the way round the lake – at only two-and-a-half miles long and less than a mile wide at its widest point it certainly sounded doable – but that was before I’d read some information about the area on a ‘Lakes walking’ website. It seemed that a certain section of the path on the south side involved a fair bit of scrambling and ‘hands on rock’ – not a good idea with two dogs in tow so for safety and sanity I stuck to the western end of the lake.

A path close to the weir took me through an area of small trees and bracken before emerging close to the lakeside and several times I went down to the water’s edge to let Snowy and Poppie have a paddle. At one point I came across a couple of backpacks and a coolbag on the ground and just down below the path two ladies were having a lakeside picnic; they had chosen a great spot and it looked like they were having a nice time.

As I got round to the north side of the lake the path veered away from the water and took me through an area of scrubland; a little way ahead was a gate so I used that as my turn-round point and retraced my steps. About halfway along I saw something I hadn’t noticed before as I was too busy looking at the views over the lake. In a grassy clearing set back off the path was a bench and what appeared to be a good view over the nearby fields but the bench was occupied by a couple with an off-lead dog bigger than my two so I didn’t go for a closer look.

Back at the weir I found that corner of the lake was occupied by an older teenager/young man about to set off on a stand-up paddle board. I watched him for a while as he paddled further out across the water; he was obviously on his own and with no life jacket so I hoped he would be okay if he fell in, especially as there was a “Danger – deep water – No swimming” sign close to where he’d left his things.

With the final couple of shots taken I headed back to the van for the return drive to the camp site – it had been a lovely few hours out and I’d been very impressed by the views around Ennerdale. Since getting back home I’ve found out that there’s a cafe in the nearby village so with the possibility of being able to get a coffee and a snack that area is now on my ‘must return’ list of places.

  1. Beautiful photos Eunice and on a lovely day. Hubby and I have tried to walk around Ennerdale with our daughter, son-in-law and their two dogs. We came to an impassable part and returned only to be soaked to the skin in the heavy rain. We spent a couple of hours in a pub trying to dry off the dogs and ourselves but it was such a long time ago I’m struggling to recall exact details. It’s a shame you came across the off lead dog and I hope the paddle boarder was OK. I’m sure Ennerdale Water is worthy of a return visit for you and the dogs another time soon, it’s a beautiful place.

    1. It was a glorious day and so clear down the length of the lake. Never having been there before I didn’t know what to expect so I was well impressed with the scenery and the views. I presume the impassable part of the path you came to was the scrambly bit I decided not to tackle and looking at the photos on Jayne’s blog I’m glad I didn’t. It’s a stunning area though so I’ll definitely go back and for longer next time.

  2. Ennerdale is delightful and thank you for reminding me that it must be on my ‘must go back soon’ list.

The scrambly bit you avoided is not too horrendous, and I appear to have lots of photos of it at mine (12th September 2013) which should give you an idea of what to expect when you do return. The round Ennerdale path is a good 8 miles because you have to go east a bit further than the end of the lake before you can cross the River Liza and come back along the north shore. (And the return path is as boring as a Boring Thing! See mine at 1st October 2013, I’d go out-and-back on the south shore path.)

    1. I knew from looking at Google maps that the eastern end of the path extends beyond the end of the lake – similar to the Loweswater path I think. Looking at your photos makes me glad I decided not to do the scrambly bit – the ‘path’ looks far too rough and too near the edge of what is probably a steep drop for me to safely tackle it on my own with two dogs. Maybe next time I’ll do two separate walks – an out-and-back between Bleach Green and the scrambly bit and an out-and-back between Bleach Green and Bowness Knott.

  3. Thank you BC (hopefully I can catch up with your blog soon 🙂 ) The views were really something so I’m pleased the photos turned out so well, and it’s definitely a place I’ll go back to 🙂

  4. Oh Eunice! It all looks so beautiful. Last time I visited, it was pouring with rain and nothing like as scenic 🙂 Your gorgeous photographs have me longing to return.
Thank you for your kind words. Xx

    1. I think anywhere looks miserable when it’s raining – Ennerdale was certainly looking good in the sunshine. Maybe next year you’ll manage to get back there yourself – take care, look after yourself. xx

    1. Thanks Sharon, it’s nice of you to say so although with views like that in good weather it would be hard to take a bad photo. It’s a lovely area and certainly worth a visit if you’re ever over that way.

  5. I love Ennerdale. Quiet for the Lakes and you can circumnavigate the lake. Did that a few times in the evening during the summer years ago when I spent a week up there a few times working at a big “factory” on the coast not so far away.

    1. I would have gone all the way round if the path had been level but not knowing how far the scrambly bit extended I wasn’t going to risk it with two dogs, and now having seen photos of it I’m glad I didn’t. A couple of there-and-back walks between the car parks will be sufficient next time.

      1. The south side is fine on forest tracks. It’s the north side that’s a bit trickier. As I recall, there’s one relatively short section which is a scramble although the rest of the route wasn’t too bad. However, definitly tricky for dogs.

  6. It looks beautiful, and so peaceful. Those ladies certainly know a good picnic spot when they see one. A shame you couldn’t get all the way round as you’d hoped but it sounds like you had a good walk anyway.

  7. Seeing those ladies having their picnic made me wish I’d taken one myself but that would have meant carrying something and I prefer to keep things simple. Camera round neck, bum bag round waist and two dogs on leads, that’s it – anything else would be hindrance 🙂

  8. Glad you like the pics Mike. I was quite surprised at how lovely Ennerdale is and the views got better as the sun moved round. I wish now I’d spent more time there but I can always revisit in the not-too-distant future 🙂
