Merely meerkats

It all started with Baby Oleg.
After having a ‘hands on’ meerkat experience at a Norfolk zoo about ten years ago I really fell in love with the cute little creatures so when a certain insurance comparison site brought out their meerkat adverts I was hooked, though as I never get any insurance through them the chance of ever getting one of their meerkat toys was absolutely zilch. Three years ago however, I saw a Baby Oleg in the window of a local animal charity shop; he was new, boxed, and a very good price so I couldn’t resist. I brought him home and he’s been sitting on top of the bookcase in my study ever since.

Just prior to my most recent weekend in North Wales I was mooching round a town centre charity shop when I spotted Sergei for sale at a ridiculously low price – a bargain not to be missed, though as I was paying for him the guy behind the counter said “His mate’s up there if you want him as well” and up on the very top shelf was Aleksandr. So they both came home with me and joined Baby Oleg on top of the bookcase.

Now I don’t know how it came about but while I was recently visiting Eileen and her hubby the meerkat toys were mentioned and it turned out that they had several duplicates which they were willing to let me have if I wanted them – so I ended up with the other four from the original seven plus a couple of extras. The one I really liked though – Ayana as Elsa from “Frozen” – wasn’t a duplicate but I was more than happy with the ones I’d been given.
Following that weekend away I searched the internet for Ayana and found her, new, boxed, with her certificate and at a reasonable price, so I sent for her and a week later she joined the rest of the meerkat family, although they aren’t all on top of the bookcase.

Although when I originally got Baby Oleg three years ago I had no intention of making a collection the meerkat family has recently multiplied very quickly thanks mainly to Eileen and her hubby, but this is where it must stop – although if I can find Ayana as Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” at a reasonable price I might be persuaded to add just one more meerkat to the family.

    1. There are quite a lot Kate. As well as these there are (apparently) two dressed as Batman and Superman, three Star Wars ones, Oleg in pyjamas, Oleg as Olaf in Frozen, and Oleg and Ayana as Beauty and the Beast, so quite a collection in total.

  1. How incredibly generous of Eileen to gift you some of the set.

I have never bought insurance from “that company” so I had no idea how collectable they have become.

    1. It was a very surprising and generous gift Jayne and much appreciated šŸ™‚ There were no toys produced after May 2018 so most of them, especially the limited editions and original ‘first editions’, have become quite collectable and can sell for silly prices if they are boxed and still have their certificates.

  2. Now look what you’ve done, hubby doesn’t think he’s got Ayana as Belle so I’m going to have to go and check for him šŸ™‚ I could see how much you liked Ayana as Elsa and I’m glad you have been able to add her to your collection.

    1. Ayana as Belle apparently dates from 2017. Sorry I’ve sent you on a meerkat hunt, I hope you found what you were looking for šŸ™‚ I’m very tempted to get Belle, she looks really cute and would go well next to Elsa šŸ™‚ I think I could say look what YOU have started šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚

    1. Real meerkats are ace šŸ™‚ My hands-on zoo experience was brilliant although I wasn’t too keen on the live mealworms they eat, but the babies were so cute I just wanted to scoop them all up and bring them home šŸ™‚

      1. I know what you mean. In my previous post I mentioned the zoo at Shaldon and watched some youngsters doing the same as you did. I could have watched them for ages šŸ™‚

  3. They are very cute, and I can see why people like to collect them. I used to have most of them myself but found they took up space that I wasn’t willing to sacrifice. Instead, I sold them on a certain auction site and used the money I made to buy myself Mog! Money well spent, I think šŸ™‚

  4. I’ve got quite a few of them. Both me and my dad had them from buying insurance but I gave all mine to my parents as my mum, suffering from dementia at the time, just loved them. She was happy to leave them in the box and just look at them so they’re all still in perfect condition. When my parents died I brought them all back home with me.

  5. A sweet little story Jo, I suppose you could call them ‘meerkats with memories’ – and if you’re anything like me you wouldn’t want to part with them now.

  7. Aw so cute. There are real meerkats at Bowland Wildlife Park near me but I haven’t been in years, not since I went with my friend and her 13 year old who was then one. I should visit again!

  8. I’ve been past Bowland Wildlife Park several times pre-2009 but never had the chance to stop and visit – maybe I should sometime, especially if they have meerkats šŸ™‚

  9. Well I had to didn’t I?! I sent for Ayana as Belle and I have to say that if anything this one looks more cute than Elsa. Of course, now I have Elsa and Belle I really should complete the pairs by getting Oleg as Olaf from Frozen and Oleg as the Beast šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚
