Friday photo hunt – lovely memory

Continuing the weekly photo hunt through February and I must admit that this week’s topic of ‘lovely memory’ really had me thinking hard. Like most people I have many good memories of various times and events in the past but only certain ones stand out. A couple of nice memories from previous years did spring to mind but I don’t have any suitable photos for them so I’ve chosen a few shots from just a couple of years ago, although the memory goes back more much further than that.
Back in the late 1970s and early 80s my parents would rent a holiday flat in Morecambe for a week in September each year and some years I would take Michael and join them for a few days. One year, when Michael was just three years old, we went picking blackberries on Heysham Head and he had his own little bag to put some in. He was with me while my mum was a few yards away and he’d picked quite a few when all at once he ran down to my mum, presented her with a handful of blackberries, and said “Aren’t I kind to you?”
Now that may not seem particularly special to most people but given his very young age his words were very sweet and actually quite amusing; my mum never forgot that moment and it’s been mentioned in conversation many times over the years. I went to Heysham Head just a couple of years ago while on a day out in Morecambe and I couldn’t help remembering Michael and the blackberries all those years ago.

Children seem to grow up so quickly these days and even though that 3-year old little boy is now a grown man on the wrong side of 40 the memory of the blackberry picking day at Heysham Head will never be forgotten by either of us.

    1. I think Michael has inherited my dad’s sense of humour and dry wit – he doesn’t tell jokes but he will often make a funny comment or do something daft which makes me laugh 🙂

  1. Shows what a kind soul he has always been 🙂 You often mention things which make me think what a thoroughly decent man he is, and this proves he was like that from the start. xx

    1. He had a good upbringing Jayne, helped by a lot of my parents’ influence and values from the age of 2, and he was the sort of child you could take anywhere. He’s always had a love of animals too and his kindness has extended to many waifs and strays which have somehow always ended up here 🙂

  2. What a lovely memory. Thank you for sharing. A lovely kind boy has grown up to be a lovely kind man. Like you I have memories but no photographs to go with them. We did not take so many pictures those days. xx

    1. I think Michael takes after my dad, very quiet, thoughtful and considerate. I did have a camera back then, it was a birthday present when I was 12 and I had it for many years, and though I did take several photos during the week we went blackberry picking I didn’t take anything like the amount I take now.

    1. I don’t think I could have asked for a better son Eileen, especially since he’s been back living with me. I know I’m independent and have been for much of my life but he does take care of me in many ways 🙂

  3. Thanks for reminding me about picking blackberries! I’ve done this for as long as I can remember. I still pick them when it is blackberry season, despite the nettles and blackberry thorns. What a lovely comment from Michael.

    1. I have a blackberry bush in my garden – it arrived out of the blue as a stray from somewhere – but it doesn’t get enough blackberries on it to be worth picking so I leave them for the birds 🙂

  4. Blackberry picking was always something we used to be forced into doing as children … as back then dad used to make his own wine. We have recently started doing our own blackberry picking and had been taking mum and dad along to help … funny how things seem go full circle 😊

  5. Michael loved going blackberry picking when he was young, sometimes with me but usually with my mum. I used to like it too and I remember one day when I was 14 falling off a wall feet first into a blackberry bush. All my mum could see was my head at the top and feet at the bottom – she managed to get me out once she had finished laughing 🙂 🙂

  6. Awe, out of the mouths of babes! What a lovely memory to have.
I remember blackberry picking with my godbrothers and what fun we had – must be something about those berries?!

    1. My mum used to make lovely blackberry pies from the berries we picked and we never had to go far from home for them either as we lived not far from the countryside.

    1. Michael is actually his middle name, his first name is Sean which is what he’s known as at work but within family and friends he’s always Michael – and I never shorten it either 🙂

  7. A lovely post & our children always surprised us when little with the things they said. I know I’ve many memories & even our grandchildren did it occasionally too. Take care, stay safe & hugs.

    1. I remember a classic of my own when I was young. I’d just got to the stage of being able to read certain long words and on holiday I’d gone to the hotel bathroom but found someone else was already in there and the ‘engaged’ sign was showing – so I went back to our room and told my mum that the bathroom was ‘engineered’ 🙂 🙂

    1. I did take a few snaps that week but they are in an album which I can’t currently get at. I know I have one of him looking very cute bouncing on a trampoline 🙂

  8. That is so sweet – children say the funniest and most honest things – I wish we could stay like that. Lovely pictures too.

  9. I’ve often wished there was a way of instantly capturing some of the things children say out of the blue – moments like that are so precious but they are gone in an instant. Even if I’d had a photo of Michael at the time it still wouldn’t convey exactly what he said and the way he said it but at least it’s firmly etched in my memory 🙂
